How Does Laser Hair Removal Work? A Plain-English Guide

The science behind laser hair reduction, why it takes a course, and what you can realistically expect.

Laser hair removal is one of the most asked-about treatments at our Christchurch clinic. You'll often hear it called laser hair removal, but the more accurate term is laser hair reduction: the aim is a long-term reduction in unwanted hair rather than a promise that every hair is gone for good. Here's how it works, in plain English.

The science, simply

A laser delivers concentrated light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. That light turns into heat, and the heat affects the follicle so it is less able to grow hair in future.

At Asylum we use the FormaTK Alpha, an 808nm diode laser. Before treatment, its Milo reader measures the melanin in your skin, so settings are based on a reading rather than a guess. A cooling tip stays in contact with the skin to help keep treatment comfortable.

Why you need more than one session

Hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the active growth phase respond well to treatment. At any given time, some hairs are growing, some are resting and some are about to shed. That's why laser hair reduction is delivered as a course, with sessions spaced to line up with those growth cycles.

The number of sessions and the spacing depend on your hair, your skin and the area being treated. Your technician will plan this with you at your free consultation.

How it compares with shaving and waxing

Many people also find laser helps with ingrown hairs and razor irritation, because they're shaving less often.

Who is it suited to?

Laser works by targeting pigment, so the contrast between hair and skin matters. Darker hair on lighter skin has traditionally responded best. Modern systems, including the Alpha with its melanin reading, are designed to treat a wider range of skin tones safely. Very light, grey, red or blonde hair has less pigment and may respond less well. Your technician will be honest with you about what's realistic.

Common treatment areas

Laser hair reduction is popular with both women and men.

Is it permanent?

Laser hair reduction can give a long-term reduction in hair growth, and many people see noticeably less, finer hair after a course. Results vary, some regrowth can happen over time, and occasional maintenance sessions may be recommended.

Is it safe?

When it's carried out by trained technicians using professional equipment, with settings matched to your skin, laser hair reduction is considered a safe treatment for most people. Some conditions, medications, pregnancy, tanned skin and tattoos in the area can affect suitability, so we go through your history before anything is planned.

Individual results vary. Your technician will discuss a suitable plan and realistic expectations at your free consultation.
